I’ll never forget flying into Bejing.
Our flight landed around 9 pm on Chinese New Year’s Eve. I had a window seat on the plane and could see bursts of sparkling colors exploding one after another far below us. It looked like the whole city was covered in a twinkling battle of lights– trying to see which part could set off the most fireworks.
A little later, we arrived at our hotel. I don’t remember the floor, but our room was up pretty high. As we started to unpack our suitcases, we heard a loud explosion. We turned just in time to see fireworks bursting at eye level outside our window. It was so crazy! We could hear little pieces of something from the fireworks actually bouncing off our window– it was that close!
That was definitely the best view we’ve ever had for fireworks!
The next day the pollution was pretty bad due to all the fireworks set off the night (and morning!) before so we spent most of our time inside. The following day was really windy though, so a lot of the pollution cleared away. It was freezing outside! But, we were grateful to have air that was a bit healthier to breathe.
We spent that freezing day in Tiananmen Square, and then later at the Great Wall.
It was such a neat experience being somewhere I had heard so much about!
I learned something new while we were at the Great Wall. Do you know how people come back down from the wall? You can walk, but they have two options that are a lot faster. We chose to ride on a chairlift they offered– it gave us a beautiful view of the area!
The other option was to ride on a super long slide all the way back down. So funny! I’d love to try it someday, but we felt like it would be too cold right then with all the wind that would blow on you while you slid down. It looked like fun though!
Have you ever been to China? It has so much to offer! If you ever get a chance to go during the Chinese New Year definitely try to get a window seat while you’re flying in 🙂
